Actually Applying High School Knowledge by Taylor - December 2016 Scholarship Essay

Hello, my name is Taylor and I would like to tell you all about one of my favorite accomplishments and why I am most proud of this accomplishment over others. The accomplishment that I am talking about was the time that I placed 2nd in the region for the finance category in the DECA, which is a business club that we do through our marketing class, regional competition.

While this might not be any national award or recognition, not even close to that big, I am still most proud of this accomplishment for a variety of reasons. First off, I received this award based on a topic and industry that I am very passionate about, which is business and finance, and it proved to me that I do have what it takes to succeed in this area. Next, one of the most important reasons why I chose this award was because it represented more than just memorizing knowledge and taking a test on that. Instead, we had to master a topic and then do interviews with judges based off scenarios that tested how well we could apply the knowledge we had to solve problems effectively. Many other kids do not test themselves and force themselves to apply what they are learning into real world settings in order to help prepare themselves for the real-world work environment. Finally, I am most proud of this accomplishment because the overall experience and process that it took to get this award taught me a ton about how to succeed in the work environment and just find success in general in my future. The process that I went through included mastering a subject, planning for how I was going to execute and solve the given problems based on the knowledge that I accumulated and then explain and work out that plan to the judge who was our hypothetical client. I learned valuable life skills through this process such as how to operate under pressure, how to manage time effectively and how to explain my thoughts and ideas to another person, and that is why I am most proud of this award.

I am most proud of this award that I achieved, through the business club section of our marketing class, because of the process that I went through to earn it and the life skills that I accumulated during this process. With this scholarship, I would have the ability to follow my passions in the fields of business and finance, by pursuing a higher education, while at the same time taking some of the burden of college debt off of my shoulders.
