The Sound of Destiny by Taylor - August 2016 Scholarship Essay

The academic subject I learned the most from in high school was choir. Many people think that the arts are irrelevant to the future of our society, but I completely disagree. The times when I felt the most "me" was when I found my way to the choir room. I was able to sing beautiful melodies and harmonies with people who enjoy the same passion for music that I do. I found who I am in that choir room. I found where my soul soared and how to dream for the future there. I found the truth that my voice is important in this world. Who I am matters.

I had a choir teacher who belittled my worth through careless words. I took his words to heart and carried them with me for many years. The thing that I realized later on though, is that he was wrong and I shouldn't have accepted his idea of who I am. I learned to take my voice back, to stand up for who I am and what I believe in.

Music has a way of soothing my heart and my soul. When singing with fellow choir members who are giving everything in themselves, I was able to hear our future. To hear how music can change hearts, change minds, change outcomes in this world. Music is the one uniting thing in this world. Music can speak when words fail. Truly.

I know that my future is bright and filled with amazing things. I also know that my future holds music forever.
