Thankful Would Be An Understatement by Sweet Carson - November 2016 Scholarship Essay
The part of my college experience that I will be most thankful for is having the opportunity to be a part of the nursing program in order to earn my degree. I know the process might be difficult; however, finally getting accepted after all of the hard work that I have put in over the years will be extremely rewarding for me. I will be beyond thankful for this experience because being a nurse in order to help people is what I have always dreamt of doing with my life. Getting accepted into the nursing program will mean that I am one step closer to my dream.
When I was seven years old, my mom was in a horrific car accident. The accident resulted in her having a cracked sternum, six broken ribs, and ten broken toes. Her worst injury from the accident, however, was the crushing of both of her ankles and feet. Her right foot was not only crushed, it was almost completely amputated. Her foot was hanging on by tendons and ligaments. My mom was told by the doctors that she needed to let them finish amputating her right foot. She refused, even though she was told that she would never be able to walk again. After three surgeries and countless hours of therapy over the last ten years, my mom can walk, even in heels! It has been a long journey for her, but what those doctors and nurses were able to do for my mom made the journey worth it. Not only did those doctors and nurses help heal her broken bones and perform life-saving surgeries, but they also gave my mom the ability to walk again. This is something she was told that she would never be able to do without a cane or crutches. Now, when people meet my mom, they have no idea that she was ever in that condition because of the doctors and nurses who did their job of helping my mom. Despite her circumstances, they honored her wish and did their best to get her to where she wanted to be. The opportunity that these healthcare professionals gave my mom is the reason why I want to be a nurse; it is also why I would be incredibly thankful for this scholarship that will give me the opportunity to pursue my dreams of becoming a nurse.
