A Friend of A Friend by Stephanie - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
Throughout all my years of school, I have always been so focused on things other than the social aspect. During middle school and high school it was always keeping my grades up and making sure I made it to practice on time. Really the only social time I participated in was cheering with the team at a Friday night volleyball game or walking the track with teammates before a big race Saturday morning. Even now in college it’s work, work ,work on top of going to school full time. It does not leave much time to enjoy the fun parts of growing up.
I have made it a New Year’s resolution of mine not to stick with the cliché start a diet, or make it to the gym every day, but to make a friend in every class. I have always been pretty shy, so this will be a bit of a challenge for me, but something I think will help me academically and to become an all-around better person. I met a girl at the beginning of last year, and we ended up signing up for one of the same classes last semester too. Although we do not have any of the same classes this upcoming semester, we still plan on making it a priority to fit in our trips to the dog park and to go out for dinner.
Making a new friend in class will help me academically because I will have a study buddy in all of my classes. Also, if there is material I do not really understand, I have someone to turn to for help. I really think it helps to learn things different ways to help it stick. On the other hand, if there is a part of a subject that I excel in I will be there to tutor as well. I have some pretty challenging courses this semester, so I’m excited to see how this will help my keep my GPA climbing. Meeting new people in each of my classes will help me socially because it will introduce me to a diverse group of people with a set of friends all their own. It will allow me to find new people to grow closer with and possibly new hobbies to fall in love with too.
I’m ready to kick off the new semester and the new year full stride! I can’t wait to see what it has in store.
