How Arts Management Benefits Society by Starienne - December 2023 Scholarship Essay
As someone who attended a performing arts middle school, and continued to a performing arts high school, I developed an understanding of the value of the arts in society. At the collegiate level, I have decided to take my arts education and my love of business administration to pursue a degree in arts management, since I have dedicated the majority of my life to my local arts communities in and out of school.
I knew from the moment I started managing within theatre productions at school that arts management was what I wanted to do. I loved the idea that I could lead teams to success and work collaboratively with others to achieve an end goal. Furthermore, I loved the idea that I was a part of something that was leaving an impact on society. I appreciated the fact that I could take my passion for business and put it into a field where I knew I belonged. I was motivated from the idea that my work was helping others achieve their own goals as well.
The field of arts management combines business administration with the arts in order to facilitate cultural organizations, arts operations, and so much more. Without arts management, the arts industry would be underdeveloped.
The arts are a way to bring all kinds of people together. People have the opportunity to express themselves and connect with people who share similar experiences. Art breathes meaning into our lives and helps us understand the world around us. With art comes will, motivation, strive, and inspiration. As a society, we need art to communicate, make statements, and leave an impact. How will our society be able to access such art and benefit from it if it is not facilitated or supported by arts managers?
My goal is to add to the number of leaders within the arts management world to make sure that our society still flourishes with arts and culture. I want people to understand that with arts management comes versatile, innovative, and excellent collaborative leaders. The world needs the arts, and the arts needs people to support from behind the scenes.
