Random Act of Kindness by sofie - November 2019 Scholarship Essay

As a Junior in high school I started the Random Act of Kindness Club and had about 120 students sign up. I believe kindness can really change someone's day because I know someone's kindness has done the same for me. Growing up my mom taught me to be kind and helpful to the people who's odds were against them; this idea has driven me to start a club and want to create a career in which I can connect with others. In my life story I've been really fortunate because I've had leaders and mentors who helped me become a better version of who I am. I'm a religious person and I believe that God has put me in the position I am today so I can help someone. For example, I am originally from Ethiopia I came to the States through an adoption process thought failed shortly after due to abuse in the home. I moved around in a short amount of time of month between five different homes not speaking a language and being totally emerged into the American culture. I've had two learn a whole new language start school later than my peers and still be accepted to college. One time I read a quote that said, “ There is something better than being a hero, it's being a survivor” and I am a survivor.I have been given the opportunity to get educated and even go to college; this idea dries me help and to be the feet and hands of Jesus Christ. I have been given a gift and a lot of times I haven't felt like it was a curse, due to some of the trauma for my younger age I had to deal with and going through an eating disorder. The struggles that I've been faced with have given me the heart to help others and to lend a hand. I have the skills to be a leader and most importantly I am compassionate and empathetic. I am able to understand people in a different level than most people can and that drives me to be the change my community needs. For instance, I organized it karaoke lunch with a Random Act of Kindness Club and had 200 students and 20 faculty members attend the event. As a member of my school Community have influenced my peers to believe in them self and to stand up for what's right through the examples of my action. I have created a community in which people are able to come and be themselves and share kindness with one another.
