Thankful for My Education by Simon - November 2016 Scholarship Essay
Thankful for My Education
“Now everyone listen up! This is extremely important to pay attention to because you need a good score on the A.C.T. to get into a college,” says my A.C.T. preparation class teacher my junior year of high school. Mona Shores High School did a great job preparing me to get into a college; however, not everyone is so lucky. I am so thankful for the opportunity to be able to continue in my education. In a world and in a country so full of ignorance and hate, education is vitally important to changing our society one person at a time. The opportunity to grow in knowledge and understanding during my college experience is what I am most thankful for.
According to Kyla Mason of PBS, almost 40% of Americans that are working-age hold a college degree. That doesn’t sound too terrible at first, but if you think about the reverse of that statement being that just over 60% of working-age Americans do not have a degree - it is a big problem. That being said, I am beyond privileged to be able to continue my education at the collegiate level. As Nelson Mandela says, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you could use to change the world.” This is so true and prevalent in our society today. With the recent presidential election, our country has been full of division and hatred! This is partially due to lack of education! Many people to don’t take time to grow in understanding of other people and culture, and that ends up causing division and pain. If we can grow together as a nation and become educated people, a lot of the fighting would be no longer. Education is crucially important to our society, and I am thankful that I have the opportunity to learn and grow during my college experience.
As you can see, education and growing in wisdom is vital to the success of our country as well as to my own personal life. I plan to be a youth pastor after college, so I can impact and change the lives of teenagers in a positive way. I will focus on teaching teens that growing in understanding, knowledge, and love is the best way to impact the world around them. To make a change, I need an education. Without the education that I am getting, I would not be able to change the world in the way that I plan to do. I am incredibly thankful for the education from my college experience in order to change peoples’ lives who will go out and change our country and the world for the better.
In a world and in a country that is so full of division, disagreement, and ignorance, people need an education to change the world around them! I am so thankful for the opportunity to grow throughout my college experience! I talk a lot about change in our country, and maybe, just maybe, with my opportunity to be educated, I can be the change that I want to see in our country.
