Theo, From Normal, to Hectic, to Happiness by sherry - April 2014 Scholarship Essay

Theo Vilmos, in the War of the Flowers by Tad Williams, is about a man who had a normal life; had a pregnant girlfriend, friends, and played in a band. Until everything went changed; His girlfriend miscarries and leaves him. To deal with the pain he moves to a cabin in the woods. During that time he starts to read a diary from a previous family member about the magical Faerie world (magical world), until suddenly a sprit named Applecore comes to rescue him from danger and pulls him into the Faerie world. Now, Theo is on the journey of his life, to stay alive, keep peace in the Faerie world, and to save the non-magical world.
Once in the magical world Theo is constantly sought after by power fairy families that want to use him for their own gain, which is to ruin the non-magical world and all the humans.

Theo is a character that has influenced me in my life by, his loyalty to his friends, his friend’s loyalty to him, and lastly, his acceptance and embrace of his life’s path.

Theo taught and influenced me to surround myself with great people. Friends and family who you would do anything for and they would do anything for you in return. During War of the Flowers, Theo is rescued multiple times by his new found friends. His most important friend he meets is a sprit named Applecore. She, saves Theo throughout the entire book, from teaching Theo the way of the Faerie world, to hiding him from his enemies and in return he saves her life. This has influenced me in my life, for example, I have continually chosen friends that I can be close enough to ask for any favor, and they also know they can ask me anything. I also am close to my family, I enjoy spending any free time I have with them, because I know they will always be there for me.

Theo has also taught me to decide what I want to do with my left, although some decisions are predetermined, that does not mean I don’t have the final say for what happens to me in my life. Which just like Theo, one can decide to give up or keep finding was to get through the hurdles of life. Theo continually finds ways to keep living, surviving, and most importantly save both the magical world and non-magical world. In my life, I could have gone the same direction as most of my family, to work in the family business, but I chose to step out of that, and decide to go to school, get a Biology degree and go to dental school.

This relates to my life because no matter what hurdles have been put in my way, I have found a way to deal with it, and make the best out of the situation. In the end I make the decision of where my life goes, how I want to live it, who I want to surround myself wit. All it takes is a goal, hard work, determination, close friends and family, and happiness.
