"Around the World" by Shelby - November 2016 Scholarship Essay
“To travel is to discover that everyone else is wrong about other countries.” -Aldous Huxley. College is a great way to experience life. It’s a place to build knowledge, build friendships, and discover the world. The college I will be attending in the fall of 2017 requires all of their students to study abroad for at least 2 weeks, although you can stay for as long as you like. It’s important to experience other cultures and build your own ideas.
Everyone has heard stories about other people’s trips to foreign countries, although I believe that you can not take someone else’s word for how great or how awful a place is. Different people have different experiences. This is why you yourself should go out and experience the world. Seeing places through your own eyes makes you grow as a person and acquire more knowledge.
I truly believe that traveling to other countries will make you a well-rounded person. Traveling to different countries gives you the opportunity to experience different styles of education. For example, Japan is ranked number two on the list of the best education systems around the world. You are able to take in new knowledge on different cultures, religions, and traditions. The more knowledge you acquire, the more successful you will be.
Finally, study abroad programs help you step out of your comfort zone. As Clifton Fadiman once said, “When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable.” I believe that it is a very healthy thing for a person to step outside of their normal routine and experience new things and new places.
As I enter college, I know now that I will be most thankful for Drury University’s study abroad program. I understand that it will not only make me grow as a person but others as well. My classmates and I will be able to gain more knowledge about other cultures, see the world through our own eyes, and be a well-rounded person.
