What is the best book you have ever read for school, and why? by Shania - July 2013 Scholarship Essay
I remember sitting in American Lit class as my teacher was handing out the book Adventures of Huckelberry Finn, and all I could think was "Great. Another old school, boring book, that I'll have to read to pass this class." I had no interest for the book, until I forced myself to start reading it. The farther I got into the book, the more trouble I had putting it down. All of the events that occured in the book were situations I could relate to my life today. From being picked on and made fun of, to being considered an 'outcast', to experiencing racism, to running away from home and making an adventure out of it, to finding your true colors and expressing yourself and not caring what others have to think. Huck Finn gave me a great insight on how we still see situations like this today and how we can prevent them to make the world a better place. After I read the book I went on a school trip to Hannibal, MO where Huck Finn grew up and I got to tour the streets he walked, the house he lived in, the diner he ate at, the river he sailed down. The book was definitely touching, and life changing. It gave me a deeper insight on life and how to reat yourself, as well as others.
