"Your Good Is Better, And Your Better Is Best" by shainea - November 2018 Scholarship Essay

My senior quote is something I’ve always thought about. Sadly my school district doesn’t allow senior quote since this year. I have really been looking forward to this moment, but now theres nothing to be excited by. If I were to choose a senior quote, and get it published, then I would use “Good, better, best. Never let it rest. ‘Til your good is better and your better is best.”- St.Jerome. This quote speaks to me on another level. My mother would always say this quote growing up. She would ask “did you do your best?” I would always reply with “ yes I did, I tried, I did pretty good, better than last time!” and she would reply with this quote, and say “don’t try your best, do your best.
This quote really hits home. My parents moved all the way to America from India, leaving their family, and friends behind. They didn’t think twice about the hardships that they would have to go through after they moved here. They just thought about us, their three children, and wanted us to have the best education possible. We started from rock bottom, but the troubles we went through didnt stop us tfrom striving. There were times we thought about moving back to India, yet we stayed put, we sacrificed a lot, for the future we have today.
To see how far we’ve come along really amazes me. If you do your best, then you will suceed. My sister just finished college, and wants to persue Optometry, and my brother is a successful Dentist. Both of them have made my parents so proud that they couldn’t stop crying at their graduation ceremonies. I want to make my parents proud, I want to cause those happy tears that were caused by my siblings before. I want to go to college, then medical school, to become a successful doctor. My parents showed me the impossible is possible if you go the extra mile. I will go the extra mile to make them proud.
