My Vision by Rachel - May 2025 Scholarship Essay
Recently, I’ve been watching a medical drama show. Although the show is unrealistic, it gave me the idea of providing daycare in the workplace. This idea took me back to childhood when my parents needed daycare centers since they worked full-time. Time at the daycare compelled me to help parents with children who can't work at home. If I had unlimited time and money, I would use my business skills to promote daycares in the workplace. This would allow parents to visit their children and work at ease.
To achieve this, I plan to use my experience from my high school and college education. In my junior year of high school, I was assigned to create a business plan with my group to make a product or service for a specific country. My group got Switzerland, and we divided the responsibilities equally, where I took the responsibility of handling human resources, operations, and distribution. For our business plan, we decided to resell Warby Parker glasses to Switzerland by shipping them in bulk from the US using DHL for delivery. In addition, we planned to store our glasses in our US warehouse and coordinate operations between our US and Switzerland headquarters. This experience helped me through college, where I learned more about how a business is run from different aspects and how I can use technology to assist businesses.
Using that as a foundation, I plan to propose to a hospital the idea of having a daycare in their hospital. If it works, I will expand to more hospitals and reach out to other businesses. I think a hospital would be a great place to have a daycare because of the long hours they endure, which makes it hard to take care of their children and find time for a babysitter. Setting up a daycare can increase work productivity and make people more interested in getting a job at the hospital during the hiring process.
The business plan will include why we should have a daycare, resource planning, funding estimates, and the hiring process. Once the business plan is approved by the board, I hope to use my connections from college clubs and future internships to divide responsibilities into different departments such as financing, human resources, marketing, and so on. I can then use my education in marketing and business analytics. Regarding marketing, I can help promote awareness by creating advertisements, hosting events, and giving presentations. For example, an event I would propose is having a Spirit Day where employees can match with their children by dressing up. This event can hopefully lead other employees to visit the daycare and find others to promote it. Furthermore, I can also use my education in technology to analyze employees’ responses to improve the daycare by using technology applications such as Excel and SQL. By using Excel, I can generate reports and show what kind of resources we need to have, services that could be implemented, and other areas that need improvement. On the other hand, with SQL, I can use databases that generate reports to have data on which child belongs to which employee, which will be good in an emergency. This report can also be used for attendance tracking, pick-up, and drop-off scheduling.
In conclusion, with unlimited time and money, I hope the education and skills I’ve gained from my studies create a positive impact in helping hospital workers with children balance their work and family life. Additionally, I hope that more businesses, besides hospitals, will adopt this idea so that more employees get the support they need.
