How AVID Has Impacted Me by Sebastian - December 2019 Scholarship Essay

In the 8th grade I joined the AVID program,and it was one of the best decisions I have made. I have been able to benefit in many ways from this program. I may not have gotten to where I am now if I hadn't joined this program.
Before AVID, I wasn't an organized person. My backpack was always full with loose papers. I had but one tiny folder for all my classes. None of the papers were sorted out. I remember always turning in my papers wrinkled, and damaged. I also lacked motivation in my schoolwork, I would turn in my homework incomplete lots of the time, not receiving all of the credit. I believed having a C in class, and simply passing was sufficient for the path I was going.
Eventually, through the AVID program, I was able to correct these issues. I started off by getting a multi subject binder. Here I was able to seperate, and sort my work. Never again have I crumbled and ruined my papers again. In addition, I was introduced to an agenda, which I now use heavily. Through the agenda or planner, I am now able to keep track of all my assignments, and important dates to come. This has been really useful in helping me not miss any deadlines for anything. In addition, AVID, and the teachers I have had in the program the last couple of years have really helped, and served as reminders of what I should be doing. If my grades were going down, my AVId teachers always reminded me. AVID provided me assistance to be able to recuperate, and comeback better every time. They also pushed me to go above, and beyond, and get involved with lots of extracurriculars, and sports. I have had the chance to work with lots of non-profit organizations, churches, schools, and local teams, as well as being on a team of my own. This was something that I may not have done myself if I hadn’t been in the AVID program.
In conclusion, AVID has done very much for me. It has helped mold me into the person I am today. I am very glad to have joined this organization.
