Leadership and College Success Go Hand in Hand by Savannah - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Based on my experience in high school, I feel that leadership is necessary in every situation. I believe this because when I was 13 I began to a have passion for India. This passion led me go to an international school and raise over $16000.00 which funded two mission trips. Had I not become a leader with my peers, community, and church, I would not have succeeded in fueling my passion for India. This can be applied to a college setting in the sense that when you attend college, it means that you are setting your mind to achieve a higher understanding of some greater knowledge than you already have. If you are fully committed to succeeding in your yearning for a higher understanding, then you will exude leadership in the process and ultimately create your success easier as a result. I was dead set on making a positive impact on India, and in the process of doing so, I began to be a leader which only made it easier to succeed in raising funds for mission trips to India, getting accepted to an international school and adapting to a different culture.

In college, one will most likely encounter situations similar to those experienced in team sports. Being a captain on my Lacrosse team, I have found that it is very easy to get caught up in the drama of other players, parents and general politics associated with playing team sports. As a leader one has to be able to separate yourself from the drama, stay focused on the game and playing the sport ethically. As the captain/leader of the team, one has to always focus on the interest of the team rather than one’s personal agenda. Only when one puts their agenda aside and seeks what is in the team’s best interest will one succeed. While everyone has their own agenda for attending college, being a leader means that one will see the greater picture, how they fit into it and what they need to do to create an environment that allows them to not only excel but succeed.
