Girl under Construction by Savannah - July 2014 Scholarship Essay

Junior year was the year I met not just a teacher but a man who would become my mentor for years to come. Mr.Black would always ask me how I was doing and about life in general, He was a once in a life time teacher. He was my construction teacher, and my mentor.

Being a high school girl in a room full of boys, doing manly tasks ain't easy! I was constantly thinking of how they probably didn't want me there or how I was a nuisance to them but I held my own and kept up with the best of them because my teacher was always telling me that I had just as much talent and reason to be in construction as much as the rest of the boys regardless of gender.

In my short two years in this class, Mr.Black pushed me further than anyone else in all of his classes because he believed in me. I went on to the Skills Usa regional competition where I placed second in Job skills demonstration and went onto State competition but did not place but I could not have been more proud standing on the stage with all of my male classmates cheering and clapping for me, i finally belonged.

To this day we still email from time to time but he knows that I appreciate his willingness to help and push me further than anyone else because it has made me the confident lady that I am today.
