The Most Effective Way According To A Kinesthetic by Sara - January 2014 Scholarship Essay
I never learned in an audio or visual fashion; I was and always have been kinesthetic. Multiplication, addition, subtraction; all those were taught to me with blocks. So for me when it comes to studying I knew that just sitting and reading notes or listening to a lecture wouldn't help me at all. I learned those flash cards, games, songs, sayings, all helped; catchy things that get stuck in the head. Colorful pictures and cards that display the concept and have the words on them become very helpful, especially when you draw them, copy them yourself.
Studying is an essential part of any learning environment; some people, very few, have the natural ability to just simply learn and retain the information. I have to take the notes and review them in my own way, with music or a game in the background. Ironically I have found that even just changing the colors on the background for each different note, or changing the color of the ink used to write can make each note stand out in your mind. The doodles on the edge of the paper become bookmarks for the notes when I close my eyes I remember reading this note by this doodle that I drew as my teacher talked.
The electronics today and the apps available help us study on the go, or to squeeze in a few extra minutes here and there which become essential the more you try to balance and do. The music in the background of an iPod as you flip through the note cards becomes linked together for me as I use this. I say that studying in more than one way, not always the basic traditional methods is what I think works best for me. Learning is an individual journey we all have to take and our brains all take to it differently. When you can find your own path in learning then you're also more likely to be able to understand what other people are going through and that’s why I think I have so much success in school and helping others learn as well.
