A Random Act of Kindness by Wilmer - March 2026 Scholarship Essay
There have been a couple of times I’ve shown an act of kindness, but one stands out to me the most. It was in 2025, and I was out running errands, driving around town and picking up a few things I needed. After I had picked something up and was getting back into my car, a lady walked up to me and asked if I had any money. I checked my wallet and saw that I had a little cash, so I gave her $10. She thanked me and walked away.
After a little while, she came back and asked if I could drive her home. She explained that she was very far from her house and said she couldn’t walk anymore because she was too tired. When she asked me that, I felt nervous and unsure. I started thinking about all the things that could go wrong. I wondered, “What if she tries to rob me or hurt me?” Since I didn’t know her, it felt like a huge risk.
However, when I looked at her face, I saw how nervous and exhausted she seemed. She did not look dangerous; she just looked like someone who truly needed help. After thinking about it for a moment, I decided to give her a ride. I was anxious the whole drive and stayed very aware of what was going on, but she was calm and grateful the entire time.
When I finally dropped her off at her house, she began to cry tears of joy. She thanked me over and over and even prayed for me, asking God to bless me for helping her. In that moment, I realized that she simply needed someone to show her kindness. That experience taught me that sometimes, even when we feel nervous, we should still help others when we can, especially if we take a moment to think carefully about the situation.
