What I'd Do With a Gap Year by Samuel - August 2019 Scholarship Essay

Like many people in the United States and around the world, my family was unable to help me pay for college due to financial issues. Because of this, my gap year would consist of making as many new friendships and new opportunities as possible for myself while also working a full or part time job. This would hopefully be in some kind of finance area, as that is the field I want to work in when I graduate from university. That way, when I finish school, I will not only be more financially stable, but I would also have prior experience in finance which would give me a leg up in job searching post-college.

Another great way to develop and discover new relationships for me has been community service. My former high school put a large emphasis on helping others that are less fortunate and cleaning up the environment. Because of this, I could use that experience to help others learn how to show people how they can be greener. In this way, my gap year would not only have an impact on my own sustainability, but also on the sustainability of the planet itself.

Most importantly, I would visit my mom who has been having a pretty rough couple of years recently. I try to spend more time with her because even when she acts like she doesn't, I know she appreciates having people around to support her. With a gap year, I could help my mom with her mental illness in order to bring about some semblance of peace and general happiness to her and my family as a whole.

With a gap year, I'd try to be as productive and multifaceted as possible while supporting my future self and the people in my life today.
