Dear scholarship comitte,

I am eagerly approaching my first year of college with the aspiration to become a registered nurse. As an African American senior, I've encountered many diverse perspectives throughout my academic and personal life, which have significantly contributed to my growth.

One particularly enlightening experience occurred during a group project in my Health Science class. I was paired with a student from a different cultural background, who held contrasting views on healthcare practices. Initially, our discussions were challenging; we seemed to be at odds regarding the importance of traditional medicine versus modern healthcare techniques.

Despite our differences, we committed to working collaboratively. As we delved deeper into the project, I began to appreciate the depth of his perspective. He shared insights on the value of holistic approaches and the integration of cultural sensitivity in patient care, which broadened my understanding of nursing beyond the clinical skills.

This partnership taught me the importance of empathy and the need to listen actively to others' viewpoints. It also highlighted the significance of cultural competence in nursing, as it can lead to more personalized and effective patient care. Through this cooperation, I learned that embracing diversity could enhance our ability to serve patients from all walks of life.

As I stand on the cusp of my college journey, I carry with me the lessons from this collaboration. I am more open-minded, better equipped to work in diverse teams, and more passionate about providing inclusive healthcare. This experience has solidified my desire to be a nurse who not only heals but also bridges gaps between different perspectives for the betterment of patient outcomes.
