The Bible: A Source of Inspiration for My STEM Journey by Sally - October 2023 Scholarship Essay
As a young woman embarking on a journey into the world of STEM, my experiences have been guided not only by my passion for science but also by a profound influence that is rather unconventional for someone in my field – the Bible. It may seem like an unlikely source of inspiration for a future public health and biology major at the University of Houston, with dreams of attending optometry school. However, the impact of this ancient text on my life and aspirations is undeniable, and I'll share how it has deeply affected me.
The Bible has been my compass, offering me valuable life lessons and insights that extend far beyond its religious context. Its stories of perseverance, compassion, and resilience have shaped my character and fueled my determination to excel in my chosen fields. The parable of the Good Samaritan, for instance, has driven my commitment to volunteer work. My involvement in organizations like Key Club, where I served as president, and my role as the Red Cross vice president, have been not only about accumulating volunteer hours but also about living out the principles of empathy and service the Bible teaches.
In the world of STEM, where challenges are frequent and tenacity is crucial, I often turn to the Bible for motivation. The story of David and Goliath, for example, reminds me that even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, dedication and the right tools can lead to success. My involvement in science fairs and research, like my work on ELISA Extraction and ALDH enzyme concentrations, has taught me that, much like David, it's possible to conquer giants in the form of complex scientific problems.
Moreover, my faith has instilled in me a sense of duty to address health disparities. The Bible's emphasis on caring for the marginalized and vulnerable has fueled my passion for public health. The principles of equity and justice it teaches have become the driving force behind my aspirations to make healthcare more accessible to underserved communities.
In a world where the intersection of science and compassion is often overlooked, the Bible has been my guide. My participation in the HCOP program and shadowing physicians is not just about gaining medical knowledge but also about fulfilling a higher purpose, one that resonates deeply with the values instilled by this ancient text.
The Bible, through its timeless wisdom, has given my STEM journey a unique and profound dimension. It has not only enriched my character but also helped me see that the pursuit of knowledge and the service of humanity can be seamlessly intertwined. As I look forward to my studies at the University of Houston and my future in optometry school, I am confident that the lessons I've drawn from this ancient text will continue to be a wellspring of inspiration, guiding me as I navigate the challenges and triumphs of the STEM world with a heart that beats for both knowledge and compassion.
