It gave me a shot at this opportunity! by Rumbidzai - August 2016 Scholarship Essay

The subject that I learnt the most from in high school is the official language of more than fifty countries, the primary language of about fifty countries and spoken by approximately 375 million people around the world. This subject is English. Looking in the rear view mirror, I can see that without the skills I learnt in my English classes, I would not have the opportunity to write this essay.
The subject of English is very essential because it improves one’s communication skills. It also gives one access to the 375 million other individuals who understand it. Being from Africa, I have had the opportunity to study abroad and one of the main reasons is because I understand English. I can only imagine how difficult it would have been for me to have to learn English in college combined with my degree classes.
My English classes created a pathway that allows me to communicate with other college students giving us leeway to share ideas. In addition, English helped me better understand almost all of my other classes. My high school English classes equipped me with writing skills that have been the bases of most of my college classes. Furthermore, English awarded me the opportunity to apply for scholarship and about a week ago I won my first scholarship essay contest. This makes me a better student to a great extent because it eliminates my worries for tuition resulting in me concentrating more on my college studies.
Whilst people who grew up in countries that have English as the primary language may take it for granted, it is safe to say I am where I am today because of my English classes. Without English I would not have understood my college application form nor would I have qualified for the college that I am attending. Thus English made me a better college student. English helped me grow as a student because it gave me access to a different world, culture and system.
