Survival in High School by Rocio - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

“ Well that’s it for our orientation. Any questions before you are dismissed?”

A short kid with glasses wearing a pokemon shirt slowly raises his hand.

“Ummm, how have you survived high school?”

I chuckled for a bit due to how innocently he sounded and the way he had asked it.

“It’s a secret,” I said.

“Awww come on tell us, “ he said. “Yeah,” the rest of the group chimed in.

“Alright,” I said. “Come closer. “ They all huddled around me.

“My secret to survival in here is to always stay on top of your game. For example, if you want to join a sport you have to get all your paperwork turned in before you can join, right? Well same with grades, you have to make sure you turn everything in on time for every class. If you feel like you have no idea what the teacher is teaching, ask your friend or ask your teacher for help. Don’t be scared. Trust me, the question that you will have, another student will likely have the same question as you. Sure, sometimes the homework, will make you feel like you are the busiest person in the world, and feel professional, but you will get used to it. You’ll learn to manage your time and have time to hang out with your friends. Developing time management skills will not only help you in high school but it’ll set you up for success in life. You do not want to be rushing last minute to get things done. You don’t want that additional stress and headaches. And what better feeling than hanging out with your friends knowing that you have finished all your work, right? That way you don’t have to worry about your school responsibilities while you are watching your favorite football team play or your favorite TV show. Just get it out of the way. That’s my secret. So, don’t tell anyone. Only you guys will know okay? And if you need help with anything and you see me around school, don’t hesitate to ask, I’ll help you. My name is Rocio Perez, and hope you all have a wonderful experience here. “

The short kid with the Pokemon shirt, seemed hesitant at first but turned towards me and tells me, “Thanks, I needed to hear that because honestly I’m scared to start high school.

“ Don’t be, was Ash scared to go to the Indigo league and compete ? Yes, but he kept training no matter what Team Rocket did. He kept going and learned from his mistakes
and that’s what you need to do. Know what you have to get done, even if it seems hard at first keep going, manage your time, and you’ll be fine.”

“Haha alright,” he chuckles and with a smile he walked away.
