The Pertinence of Priorities in College by Rebekah - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
I consider myself to be a pretty good student. I make good grades and I work pretty hard to get those grades. However, there is always room for improvement. For this semester, and the rest of my academic ventures, I have decided to prioritize my schoolwork better, and to really work with intention. I am trying to make sure I remember that if I don’t get downtime for a couple days because of other things, it is not the end of the world. Remembering that I am not entitled to have fun and relax at least once a day is very important. There are things that are a more worthwhile and fulfilling use of my time.
Shifting priorities and fighting procrastination is very difficult. I’m struggling with it as I write this. Despite what I may think in the moment, however, this is ultimately the most important thing I can do with my time right now. When I begin the semester and go to my first classes tomorrow, there will be times when I don’t want to do schoolwork. Despite my unenthusiasm, I am almost certain that when that time comes, that schoolwork will be the most important thing I can do at that time.
Shifting my priorities and exhibiting more self control will not only make me a better student in 2016, it will make me a better person and a harder worker for the rest of my life. Committing to this decision will serve me well as I finish college, get a job, and live my life. There are many college students who face this problem every day, but I don’t want to be one of them. I refuse to be another lazy, entitled millennial, or put myself in a position where I can be accused of being one. I want people to look at me and see a hardworking, dedicated, reliable adult. All I have to do is take that first step. Even though it’s hard, it is what needs to be done.
