How I Impacted My School by Rebecca - November 2019 Scholarship Essay
High school is the perfect time to explore your talents and abilities while helping your fellow neighbor. Senior year is an especially optimal time to use those talents and lead the student body to fulfill its potential. Throughout my career, I have been a part of various clubs that have helped my school and the community at large. One such organization, Spirit Club, stands out to me the most.
Throughout high school, my friends and I noticed that the spirit of the school steadily declined year after year. We knew that once we became seniors and were able to make real changes, we would need to do something drastic to flip the downward trend. Finally, at the end of junior year, my friends and I proposed to our administration the formation of a brand new club called Spirit Club. I wrote a formal letter detailing why we wanted to make this club and how we were going to accomplish such change. I described the correlation between increased school spirit and an increase in learning, positive behavior, and attendance. After an interview with our assistant principal, the school agreed to our existence. We nominated titles with mine being Secretary.
Now that it is the beginning of my senior year, the club has already accomplished some incredible feats for its first year. We started the school year off with a bang by having a senior potluck breakfast before the first day of school. We then got into fundraising by designing and selling spirit shirts. With that money, we rented a bouncy house and created an obstacle course for the homecoming pep rally. This was a complete surprise for the students as this was an unprecedented event. The homecoming court went through it first for prizes, then the student body and faculty were invited to use it as well. The club also planned and organized the tailgates before football games. We had Chick-fil-A and yard games for the students to enjoy. Finally, we planned the themes and activities for the sporting events. We had blackouts, pinkouts, safari, and camo. Personally, I dressed up as the school's mascot and got hold of some unused cheer equipment such as megaphones. We purchased face cutouts of two popular teachers for the student body use during games. All-in-all, Spirit Club has been a success so far.
Spirit Club is far from completing all it wants to do. In the winter, we plan on holding other fundraisers such as pie face where the students pay to pie a teacher. We will also be in charge of half-court shot competitions during basketball games. In the spring, we would like to have a field day for the students to let loose after being cooped up all winter. A maintenance man appreciation day, lip dub, and end-of-the-year cookout are all in the works for after the new year. Lastly, we have included some underclassmen and leaders of other organizations in our meetings to give us new ideas and pass on the legacy for after we graduate. With the success we have had in bringing the school together, it is only reasonable to assume the rest of the school year will be just as successful.
I believe that I have positively impacted my school by being a founding member of the Spirit Club. With new ideas and a positive attitude, my school has benefited from the fruits of such an organization. In years past we did not have tail gates or spirit shirts. There are better student-faculty relations, a healthier atmosphere for learning, and more memories being made. My dream for a better school is a reality because of my initiative and new ideas.
