Expanding My Interests by Randee - July 2014 Scholarship Essay
When I was a Sophomore in high school, I was going through a lot of personal issues that affected my schooling. I started to dread going to school, and even my favorite subject - English - became difficult to endure. I started missing a lot of school, and I was getting close to failing the year entirely.
In the middle of my crisis, I changed science teachers, and things started to change. I had always hated science class, and with everything else going on, science just didn't seem important. After a few days in my new science class - with a new teacher - that all changed. The teacher - Ms. Molly - re-introduced me to a subject that I had always struggled with. Learning biology with Ms. Molly made me want to go to school and learn more. I decided I wanted to pursue a career in biology - genetics in particular. Ms. Molly gave me extra credit assignments and harder worksheets than what she gave the other students, and she had me research various different topics. Ms. Molly also helped me find schools that would help me get a biology degree and various scholarship opportunities.
In the end, having only one class with one teacher that I enjoyed wasn't enough to keep me from dropping out, but Ms. Molly planted a passion for science in me that has continued to grow ever since. Because of her, I know what I want to do with my life, and that's something I will always treasure.
