Dear Professor by Ramon - January 2015 Scholarship Essay
As a student I known the way a professor teaches the material of a class affects how well I learn the material. In other words, the way a professor gives a class could be a difference between one letter grade and another for me. In my case in particular I am a visual learner. Therefore, I learn best by seeing and hearing things in contrast to the traditional method. Normally, most professors will simply lecture on the day’s topic. Unfortunately, most of the time the lecture becomes a type of reading of the textbook. This type of lecture, while necessary and the basis of the class, in itself can be draining for the student.
The best advice I can give my professors for helping me learn is to have videos. For example, in a Biology class simply talking about the process of photosynthesis is one thing; however, seeing and hearing a video about it makes a very significant difference. By having a video everything I’m reading about in my book comes to life. I can see the various processes in action, identify the parts I am learning, understand the order in which things occur, visualize everything in a more 3D aspect, etc. In general, videos are a great supplement to the class.
Do not misunderstand, however; I am not suggesting the use of videos in place of lecture. This could be just as draining as the traditional lecture. Videos should be in any case to add on to the lecture. That is my one piece of advice to my professor to help me learn: to use videos to supplement the class lectures.
