My Ideal Learning Environment by Rachel - October 2014 Scholarship Essay
The traditional “one-size-fits-all” classrooms aren’t always as effective as some people may think they are. Everyone learns differently, whether they be an auditory, visual, or kinesthetic learner. Classrooms should focus on teaching in all of these ways.
The perfect classroom encompasses the following attributes:
• Knowledgeable teachers- No one wants to work out of a book all of the time! Teachers that know the material and organize interesting activities are desired.
• Teachers that care about their students- Students want to feel as if their teachers actually want to be there and help them.
• Positive energy- A warm, open environment that stimulates the senses is much more appealing than a classroom with plain walls and straight desk rows.
• Students on the same intellectual level- Nothing is more aggravating than being in a classroom with students that are either intellectually superior or inferior to you.
• Small number of students¬- A small number of students is better because the instructor has an easier time managing the classroom and they can teach the students more effectively.
• Comfortable lighting, temperature, and noise level- Being in a classroom that doesn’t have these qualities can make you feel absolutely miserable and it makes it extremely hard to learn.
• Open classroom discussions- Not everyone wants to raise their hand to answer questions or be called on. Students should be allowed to openly discuss topics with their teachers during class time.
