#itlifts by Rachel - April 2018 Scholarship Essay

I strongly believe that education has shaped my life in many ways. As a young child starting to learn basics such as colors and shapes, I thirsted for more knowledge of my surroundings. My older brother would practice multiplication flash cards while I was learning how to add small numbers. I clearly remember repeatedly asking him to teach me the product of eight and seven. Looking back on my years as a small child, my desire for education and growth became stronger. As an eight year old girl, I remember watching my mom stare at a computer screen of graphs that seemed to have no end. As I said good night, I knew that she would be up long after I fell soundly asleep. At the age of 45 she returned to school to achieve a certificate as a histotechnician. This certificate was reward of the great amount of effort and time she put in to complete this program. This education gave her the skills to work as a Histotechnician, giving her the ability to financially support my brother and I.

At the time, I did not understand why mommy stayed up until the early hours of the morning studying, typing papers, and doing assignments. As a senior in high school, I have gained an understanding of the importance of education in any individual’s life. My mom had to no other choice but to learn the balance of being a single parent, working full time, and advancing her career by continuing her education. I believe this example is pure proof that education can have a substantial effect on a person’s life.

My thirst for knowledge motivates me to stay up late studying for exams, while my desire to succeed causes me to accomplish long hours of homework. My mom has been an extraordinary role model, and watching her dedicate her time to education while still giving my family tenderness has inspired me largely to exceed in my studies. Next year, I am planning to attend the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse while majoring in Exercise Sport and Science. I am very eager to continue my education and start working towards my career as a personal fitness trainer. Without education, I would not be able to accomplish this aspiration. I can undoubtedly say that education is responsible for the lifting of a family, the growth of a career, and the passion of a student. I chose the hashtag #itlifts to show the positive impact education can make on a person's life.
