North West and West Side Volunteer Fire Department by Quintin - May 2018 Scholarship Essay
I've volunteered for many things, but the best and what I feel to be the most important thing was I volunteered at 2 fire departments. There I was training to be an engine mechanic and EMT. I learned very useful skills like what to do if someone were to become unconscious and the necessary steps to do while waiting for official EMT/Medics arrive on scene.
Other things I learned to do while on the departments were how to get people safely out of a fire in the case I had to. I also learned what chemicals would put out what fire and how to extinguish any fire on a non-team scale. I learned how to do public safety properly and how to calm down a situation in the case of something life-threatening were to happen.
In a near by town named Kelly they have an event called the Kelly Greenman Days or the "Little Greeman Days". They celebrate a sighting of aliens in the past. Well such an event lined up with the Little Greenman Days and it was the 2017 Solar Eclipse. People from all over the world came to see both events. I along with other members of my department volunteered to station there in case a fire were to break out or someone needed a quick medic.
The experience has left me with useful information and documentation such as my CPR certification card and I have made so many friends during my time at the departments. The different emergencies I have been called to improved my quick thinking and I have thanked them for letting me get that hands on experience.
