Academic Role Reversal by Peter - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
If I had to teach one academic subject, it would be social studies. I have always been a follower of history and politics and I believe that students engage with teachers who can make history come alive. I remember my history teacher in seventh grade, Mr. Garvin, making history such an interesting and engaging subject.
I'd be especially interested in teaching a civics class. I feel that impressing upon young
minds the need to be active in society and to contribute to its institutions is as sacred a duty as any educator can have. I believe that teachers and coaches have a responsibility to guide young people toward a life of service or at least to be upstanding citizens.
As a volunteer ice hockey coach at The University of Delaware and a high school teacher, I come into contact with many young people and I believe that I have an impact on them through mentoring and guidance. I feel as though my role as a teacher makes me a better coach and I enjoy influencing young
minds.
In the end, it may not matter what subject I teach, per se, because my most important job is to teach children how to grow into mature and responsible adults.
