Communication: the Key to Our Past, Present, and Future by Payton - February 2019 Scholarship Essay

A wise man by the name of Malcolm X once said, “Education is the passport to the future…” and I could not agree with those words more. Throughout my life I have learned many things both simple and hard, whether it was learning how to tie my shoes as a kid, or learning about limits and summation notations in calculus, the world always has something new to teach you. With all of these experiences and lessons we are challenged with throughout life, we are expected to hit roadblocks and successes at some point with the help of our determination and perseverance. While I know that I will continue to experience these lessons that life has to bring me, I would love to help others around me through those roadblocks that might be challenging them in this next chapter of my life.
It all started during the eighth grade job fair when I went to the speech pathology booth. While many of the kids found the job boring and were more interested in the booth where the police officer was showing off all of his gadgets, I found what this lady had to say very interesting. Ever since that day I have always had a part of me that wanted to help people that might be experiencing a roadblock in their lives through speech or language problems, which brings me to how I became interested in majoring in communication sciences and disorders. By majoring in communication sciences and disorders I am one step closer to my dream job of becoming a speech language pathologist, and being able to help those around me communicate their feelings, thoughts and ideas!
Next year I plan on attending the University of Wisconsin Madison to study Communication Sciences and Disorders. By continuing my education I am not only being granted with the gift of being able to learn more about what I can do to help others, but it also sets me up with the first step to reach my dream job. After I have finished my bachelors degree I plan on moving forward to earn my masters degree where I will hopefully then be blessed with the ability to help both the young and old find their voices. I could not be more excited to learn and grow with the many different opportunities that lie on the path in front of me, and cant wait to show the world that everyone deserves a voice.
