The Experience of a 14 Year-Old by Nubia - November 2016 Scholarship Essay
Early College High School, an interesting way to define those who really care about their education, and most importantly, their future. I am part of this incredible program where I get to dedicate myself in a higher education at such a young age, where most other high school students don't even get the chance to experience half of it. With that said, I am thankful for the experience I had at a community college and for getting a higher education because I will get to reach all of the goals I have, and most of all, I will gain the knowledge to become a better person for my generation and to help our future generations.
Stress, anxiety, and a lot of hard work and dedication, made me realize that I made a great decision at fourteen years old to enter a high school where I get to also attend college with students who are over eighteen years old. It was overwhelming at first because they saw a random child in a college class getting ready to learn something new. They would ask me, "how old are you?" and I would respond, "fourteen," once they knew my age they were amazed of how young I was and were content that I was unique from any other regular high school student.
Even though I did not have the typical, fantasy high school experience, I did gain an experience that was completely unique and not retold as another predictable high school story. Instead of football games I dedicated my time for the Special Olympics. Instead of a couple of Pep Rallies, I showed my school spirit every Friday with the different activities provided for all students. Instead of wasting my time in drinking and partying, I would use that time for homework and studying. Instead of being at home doing nothing, I spent my afternoons in college laboratory classes. After all these years in a persistent and overall achievement school, I believe I have acquired all characteristics that define me as a student who is determined to accomplish all challenges that education delivers to me. And that is why I truly thankful for having a higher education will benefit me for future life choices and to discover my true destiny.
Because I already had college experience, I know that once I get to the university I want, the first thing that’ll come in mind is the decision I made for entering an early college high school and it will be the first thing I'm thankful for. Once I get through experience the rest of the university, I will be thankful for the teachers, the students who will help me reach my goal, and most importantly myself for going through rough pathways that made me who I am and who I will be.
