Nivi's Crafts by Nicole - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

I’ve spent many summers in Peru, where I encountered animals wandering the streets. They told silent stories of abandoned souls. Their eyes reflected tales of hardship, resilience, and a desperate yearning for comfort. I extended a gentle hand during each encounter, offering solace to these wanderers. A flame of determination ignited within me, inspiring me to give them even the slightest taste of the warmth called "home."

My commitment unfolded by volunteering at an animal shelter. My mission extended beyond the usual tasks. I became a storyteller for the voiceless, guiding potential adopters to see beyond the frail exterior masking the beauty of each animal. I walked them through potential lifelong happiness and companionship, emphasizing the joy of gaining a loyal friend.

Every visit to the shelter added to my determination. Witnessing the absolute delight on the faces of these animals when freed from the confines of cages fueled me. It reminded me of my childhood experiences in Peru— offering moments of comfort before the inescapable return to the unforgiving streets.

The commitment transcended that of a routine. It became a bridge between my Peruvian roots and the present. The animals taught me to delve into the depths of understanding, to acknowledge that every being carries a story. In helping them find love, I discovered the connection between empathy and meaningful impact, unraveling the threads that bound me to the shelter's inhabitants and the memories of Peru.
