The Classroom of an Aviator by Nicholas - July 2020 Scholarship Essay
Throughout life, you will be a student in many different ways. Even more so, the many classrooms that you will venture through in life will vary in size, color, shape and sometimes even altitude! Becoming a professional pilot has been a long-time dream of mine and every day I step closer to achieving this dream. The classroom of an aviator is an ever-changing environment that is never the same as it was the day before. This constantly changing classroom presents challenges every day that keeps me on my toes and is the reason why my dream classroom looks like the cockpit of an airplane.
There is an adage in the world aviation and it says; “a good pilot is always learning.” As mentioned, when you are a pilot and are piloting an aircraft, no one day is the same. Aviators of all different professions are students in one way or another. The best way pilots are able to learn and gain experience is to simply fly! The cockpit is a classroom that helps me excel as a pilot because it is the classroom that allows me to learn and excel at being an aviator at the same time. Of course, a pilot has many different classrooms as well ranging from a typical square room with desks to even full motion simulators. None of these types of classrooms compare to my dream classroom of an airplane’s cockpit. By being in the cockpit of the airplane, I am able to sharpen my skills, learn how to identify weather hazards by sight instead of text and be able to ensure the satisfaction and safety of all my passengers onboard.
In conclusion, hands on learning is the method of learning that helps me excel with haste and assists in retention. The ever-changing classroom of an airplane cockpit is one that presents new challenges every day and keeps me mentally sharp and willing to learn. This is why the cockpit of an airplane is my dream classroom.
