Persevering Battles in the World of STEM from my Inspiration by Nia - March 2023 Scholarship Essay

Growing up, my grandmother was always a role model to me. She worked hard her entire life, starting from a young age, and was able to achieve so much despite facing many obstacles as a black woman who had two kids at a young age meanwhile trying to pursue multiple degrees, at a time when opportunities were limited for people like her. She was a nurse for many years and was passionate about helping others, something that has always stuck with me. As I try to achieve my own goals in the world of technology as a black woman with three jobs, my grandmother's stories and challenges motivate me through my journey.

As my grandmother grew up in a segregated community in Illinois and faced discrimination and prejudice throughout her life. Despite this, she never let it hold her back. She worked hard to get an education and pursued a career in health, something that was not common for black women at the time. She worked long hours and made sacrifices to support her children as a single mother, but she always found a way to make things work. She showed me that hard work and determination can overcome any obstacle.

My grandmother is inspiring to me as I pursue a career in SREM. As a black woman in a field that is dominated by white men, I have faced challenges and obstacles. It can be hard to stay motivated and keep pushing forward when it feels like the odds are stacked against you and while looking around, I seem to be one of two black women of color in my classes. However, I know I am just as capable as anyone else.

One of the biggest challenges I face is balancing my three jobs with my studies. It can be exhausting and overwhelming at times, but I remind myself why I am doing this. I want to be a representation of my community and show that black women can succeed in any field, including technology. I want to inspire other young women and be the representation I never had as I pursue my dreams. I know that it won't be easy, but I am willing to work hard and make sacrifices to achieve my goals.

In conclusion, my grandmother has been a constant source of inspiration and motivation for me. Her life has taught me the value of hard work and determination, and I am grateful for her guidance and support. As I work towards my degree and try to be the best that I can be, I hope to honor her legacy and make her proud as she continues to push me forward as she is still to this day owing her own business even when retired.
