The Life Aspect of Statistics by Nia - June 2016 Scholarship Essay
Statistics was one of the most challenging courses I had ever taken, not to mention the fact that it was a dual credit college course. I spent hours every night reading, studying, and practicing anything and everything that had to do with statistics. A course that started off with nearly thirty students ended with nine. My friends dropped the class, yet I stayed. I have always been the type of person that never quits anything, no matter how much effort, time commitment, and stress comes with it.
A few weeks into the class, my grade was tanked and there seemed to be nothing I could do to save it. One night I stared at the textbook until the words seemed to move around the page, and I came to a realization: Statistics is about life and people, and if I could focus on that aspect alone, then it would all click. I began to treat all of the tests and conclusions as if I had done them myself. I made connections and understood the data in a new way. Before I knew it, I had worked my awful grade up to something much more exceptional.
This class was definitely a learning experience for me. I found out that challenges are meant to help you understand yourself better and increase your capabilities. I never thought that I would make it in that course, but thanks to perseverance I succeeded. I will never sell myself short and always strive for greatness, because there truly is no limit to what someone can achieve.
