My Passion for the Medical Field by Nguyen - March 2020 Scholarship Essay
As of right now, I am on track to graduate from high school June of 2020. After this, I plan on attending George Fox University to major in nursing with a minor in psychology, specifically related to children, adolescents, and young adults. During my time in school, I will work with my professors and counselors to find a health-related internship or volunteer work that will help me gain a better understanding of the field of medicine. I also hope to be able to participate in a research project that I care about, for example, a less well-known disease or how an area of psychology affects our physical well-being, which connects the two fields of nursing and psychology. Through my clinical rotations in nursing school, I want to find a specialty in nursing that I am most interested in pursuing, such as mother and baby.
Once I graduate and earn my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in the spring of 2024, I will apply for a registered nursing position at one of the surrounding hospitals and healthcare clinics such as Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente, or OHSU. For the first few years in my career, I plan on working as a float pool nurse. This way, I will be able to explore the different areas of nursing and get long-term hands-on experience in each of the specialties. One of the things that I look forward to doing and something that interests me most about nursing is how it is a career that constantly evolves and requires continuous education. I will work hard to learn about the technological and medical advancements that come with each year.
After I get more comfortable with my job as a nurse, which is about a couple of years later, I will return to school, where I will attend graduate school to work towards earning my Master of Science in Nursing degree for another two to three years. This will help me to become an advanced practice registered nurse, for example, a nurse-midwife or a psychiatric nurse practitioner. I will use my master’s degree to gain a larger scope of practice and to contribute my ideas to help our current healthcare system deliver the best possible care to patients.
While things can change and very likely will change, I will try my best to be flexible and to always stay optimistic no matter what obstacles come my way. It is possible that in the next 10-15 years, my career interests will go in another direction, hopefully not too much, but I will learn to accept them and grow from my mistakes. I will make the most of all opportunities available to me in order to become the best healthcare professional that I can be and make a positive difference not only in my community but in the future of our nation’s health.
