School and Sports by ned - June 2014 Scholarship Essay
If I were to write a book, I would write an autobiography about my high school student-athlete experience. Throughout my four years of high school athletics, I faced many diverse situations and had to overcome them in different ways. I feel that these situations helped me grow as a young adult and shaped the person I am today. My first injury occurred my sophomore year during summer football camp when I ruptured two discs in my back. This set me behind all the other players because it took me away from lifting and practicing. When I was cleared to play after my back had healed, I worked hard and found myself a starting spot on the offensive line. Unfortunately, at the end of the football season I fractured my knee cap, and I was taken out of the first half of my basketball season.
I sat on the sideline for our first 15 games and many practices. For me injuries were never an issue before sophomore year. I was not the quickest kid on our basketball team; however, I was the tallest and best post player. Our team nearly fell apart without me and the lack of rebounding ability the power forwards had.
My last two injuries occurred nearly back-to-back when I sustained a concussion during my senior year of football. It was our senior night and our last chance to try and earn a spot into the playoffs. Sadly, we were defeated and I was taken out with a concussion leading to another beginning of the basketball season without me. When I was finally cleared from my concussion, I broke my ankle at the very first practice I participated in. It was not a serious break, and I did not receive treatment until three days after breaking it. This shows that I have character and the necessary drive to accomplish many things in life.
