The Good People of the World by Naomi - December 2019 Scholarship Essay
Community service has always been a big deal to me. Maybe not logging the hours or making sure you half enough hours, just serving to serve. I have always had a heart for people in need of particular services. I loved helping the disabled, ill, homeless and I enjoyed just being their company and having a good laugh with them. I finally got to do that on a more professional level once I enterd an organization called NJHS.
NJHS stands for National Junior Honors Socitey. It is a program in which young individuals, like me, get to come up and perform community service around the school or in the community with others. I loved coming up with ideas and voting on them, even though I wanted to do them all. We set up dances for our school, helped out the salvation army, donated to Toy’s for Tots, donated cans to the homeless shelter and many other wonderful service activities. My favorite one that we did as a group was ringing the bell for the Salvation Army. Me and some of our NJHS members, drove down to our local Walmart and rang the bell, asked people to donate, and sang Christmas carols. It was such a joy to be able to see the variety of kind-hearted people donate to the Salvation Army. It opened my eyes to how many good people there are in this world.
Serving in the NJHS organization really broaded my idea of community service and helped me see that this world is full of a lot of good people along with the bad. Growing up, I percieved the world to be dangerous and full of bad people. However, ultimatly there are so many good people who are willing to help those in need. I was forever changed by the NJHS club.
