My 10 year plan by Morgan - March 2020 Scholarship Essay

My ten year career plan began when I accepted a position as a Medical Support Assistant at the VA Medical Center in Omaha, NE. I knew that if I could just get my foot in the door there would be so many new opportunities open to me. The next step in my plan is to attend nursing school. I have been accepted at Metropolitan Community College in their LPN program. Once I successfully complete all classes there in November I will be automatically accepted into the RN program there which would start six months later. At the end of my LPN classes I will take the test to become licensed so I can start practicing as a nurse right away. Once I have completed my RN classes and am licensed I will again transition to a new position within my scope of practice. I plan to take one year off from school between getting my RN and BSN so I can perfect my nursing skills. I think this will be helpful knowledge and experience as I go forward in my pursuit of my BSN. I plan to take RN to BSN classes online at the University of Nebraska Medical Center which will take two years to complete. While working towards my BSN I hope to specialize in nursing in either the Emergency Department at the Omaha VA Medical Center or in Mental Health. I am someone who thinks quickly and responds to stress very well, so the ER excites and interests me. The mental health department is intriguing to me especially with the veteran’s suicide crisis we are facing today. I believe I would do well in that department because I can think logically, quickly, and am empathetic towards and passionate about America’s veterans.
I plan to work for the VA for 5 years total, and after that I would like to start working as a travel nurse around the country. Travel nursing, to me, is an opportunity to learn more about the health needs of different parts of our country. I also think it would be an amazing experience for my daughter and I to experience different cultures and ways of life before she starts middle and high school. Not many adults or children can say they’ve lived in or even just traveled to multiple states within the US. Once it is time for my daughter to start middle school I will move back home to Nebraska and start working again for the VA until I’m ready to retire!
