Discovering Myself by Morgan - November 2016 Scholarship Essay
The main reason people attend college is to gain a higher education and experience an expansion of knowledge. Moreover, people attend for the experience (both the good and the bad). What would college be like without the rebellious acts of students at parties or the times of realization when someone stole your clothes out of the laundry machine? For some college students, the experience is about building a bridge between living with parents/guardians and living without familial support. The college experience I will be most thankful for is self-discovery.
Growing up in a military family, I have moved from place to place. While living a life of nomadism, I have never lived in a place longer than four years. Yet, I am thankful I have never lived in a place for less than six months. I have always been in love with the idea of stability. To live in a place for an extended amount of time, to obtain lifelong friends. I realize now that change is inevitable and fresh starts are necessary every now and then.
I am pretty sure that the only thing I ever wanted to do my whole life was to be a Veterinarian. I had huge aspirations and I wanted a successful job that would make me happy every day. Now my senior year in high school, I realize that I wouldn’t truly be happy being a Veterinarian. I would probably be in a lot of debt, emotional every time I euthanize a beloved family pet, and I would probably regret my decision. Therefore, I decided to wipe my slate clean and start fresh. Moving to a new state the start of my senior year, I think that there was no better time to start fresh than now.
While attending college, I know that I will be given countless opportunities to discover myself. For example, living in a place without my family would not only challenge me to live a healthy lifestyle, but to discover my true self without parental influence. There are successful professors and guest speakers that will influence the majority of the student body to rediscover themselves. There are students who want to be lawyers their entire lives discover that they are more passionate about teaching. Personally, I hope this happens to me.
So far, I have let the idea of being a Veterinarian dissolve. Right now, I am looking into communication sciences and disorders. The idea of helping children communicate and create friend or helping a stroke victim regain the use of communication makes me content inside. With the college experience of self-discovery, I think I will be able to find myself and my true occupation in life.
Self-discovery never truly ends. I am thankful for the chance to discover myself while attending college. The worst thing a person can do in this life is to choose an occupation and realize ten years later that they despise that form of work and that they are passionate for another line of work. I refuse to let this be me. I will have an occupation that I love and I will be surrounded by an environment filled with love and growth. That is the reason I am thankful for the college experience of self-discovery.
