Why I Am Thankful for My Education by Mohammed - November 2015 Scholarship Essay

There are many aspects of education that a person can be thankful for. The aspect of education that I am most thankful for is learning basic life skills. These skills include communicating, reading, and writing. Communication allows a person to socialize with others and the person feels as if they belong. Reading helps a person to expand their horizons by gaining more knowledge. Writing helps a person express inner thoughts and helps to have an advantage in opportunities, such as jobs. Without these important skills one cannot live an independent life in the twenty-first century.
When I first moved from India to the United States I barely knew how to answer if someone asked me my name, because I only knew one language. However once I started school here in the United States I was put into a special class called ESOL, English to Speakers of Other languages. In this class I first started to learn how to communicate with fellow classmates and my teachers. This helped me to understand the language around me and helped me make new friends. Communication helps one socialize in an environment which that person is not familiar in.
Once I had learned the basics of communication, I started to learn how to read English. Reading helped me build my vocabulary, learn more knowledge, and improve my writing skills. Reading built my vocabulary by introducing me to new words and allowing me to use context clues to figure out the meaning to these new words. As I read I gained more knowledge about the world and the type of culture I was in. Reading also helped me to improve my writing skills by allowing me to implement what I read and put it on paper, be it a new word that I understood or a phrase that I had learned. Reading also helped me to expand my horizon as a student and as a person.
Writing in today's world is like a master key. It opens up many doors for a person that were once closed. Being able to write well helps one stand out in a scholarship essay or on a job application. As I started to write, I learned how to write sentences and then paragraphs and finally a whole essay. Writing also helped me to express my inner thoughts on paper. Writing helped me to open doors that were closed once before. This is a blessing that I am thankful for.
Education is an important part of the twenty-first century. Without some form of education a person in today’s world cannot live to be successful. Education helps a person gain basic life skills, such as; communicating, reading, and writing. I am thankful that my education has provided me with each of these skills. Communication with fellow citizen helps me to socialize. Reading helped me to become independent by helping me to learn more knowledge, increase my vocabulary and improve my writing skills. Writing helped me to open doors that were once closed to me. These are the aspects of education that I am most thankful for.
