Companies Want Leaders, Not Followers by Milagros - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Companies wish to hire leaders, not followers. Your goal in college is to attain the necessary knowledge in your field of study to secure the job you have been seeking. For that reason, showing leadership skills, when needed, will allow you to have college success. Displaying your leadership skills in clubs, classrooms, and sports teams will help you stand out from a group of followers.

Leadership skills are essential for college success. Taking the role (when the situation calls for it) will not only catch the professor’s attention, but also challenge and prepare you for the “real thing.” When you’re in college, all of your classmates are also your competition. Because there is not just one university in the entire world and not just one student in each major, standing out is critical for college success as well as your future. Having leadership skills will promote college success because you are becoming someone in a classroom full of students who may just as well be anybody. In my opinion, these skills are necessary if used wisely.

I am not discrediting those who are just followers. If everyone wanted to be leader then there would be chaos. Unfortunately for them, followers do not attract the attention of companies. Companies want students who will take charge when there is a problem. For example, going into the medical field I know that the Emergency Room will bring surprises through its’ doors at any moment. For that reason, making sure that I can gather my team and work flexibly with the different patients and their injuries will be crucial. Leadership skills in my field will be important not only to accomplish my requirements as a nurse, but also to stand out during my college years to attain that job in the first place.

Knowing the power of leadership comes with knowing what a good leader must look like. A positive leader exhibits their leadership characteristics when no one else seems to know what to do. They form a plan with the cooperation of their group members. Their positive influences encourage the flux of different approaches to different ideas. This will lead to college success because it helps you stand out.

At the end of the day, college success is determined by your capability of landing the job you have worked hard for.
