Appreciating Art by Mikayla - June 2018 Scholarship Essay

High School is a time for growing as an individual, learning new techniques, and experiencing new opportunities. During my sophomore year I took an art elective course that I did not expect to like. The main reasons I took it were to get an easy A and be in a course with some of my friends. Little did I know how much I would enjoy the course.
Throughout taking this art course I learned how to write in graffiti, make pottery, understand color combinations, and improve my drawing skills. Not only did I just enjoy learning new skills but I was intrigued and excited with every assignment we completed. I strongly believe this class should be required so that other students can learn the beauty of art, develop new skills, organizaton, and learn how to express yourself through art. Ever since I took that class I continued to take other art courses for pure enjoyment.
Even after this class was over, I continued to use art as an outlet when I did not know how to express emotions. Additionally, it has helped me when I need to be creative for school projects, party decorations, making cards, or making things for myself to save money. Art is every where around us, and I believe many people do not appreciate its beauty and everything it has to offer.
Although I am a nursing student, all the art courses I have taken have been able to help me in my career. After I graduate I plan to work in the pediatric unit and kids love when you decorate their rooms to make them more like home or just color with them. Even though my major isn't art, it is evident in my life and put a smile on others faces.
If I could go back in time, I would start taking art classes earlier and encourage my friends to do so as well. I can't thank my teachers over the years and art enough for the impact it has had on my life. As I continue through college and pursue my degree in nursing, I will continue to take art wherever I go
