I Create Stories by Michelle - September 2024 Scholarship Essay

I only have one language. This is very disappointing considering that I could not even speak the language of the country I lived in. I started wanting to learn more as I got older because I realised that I could not go to any places without my mom.
When I was learning because nothing was clicking in my mind I decided to take my struggle to Google because it is known to always have an answer. I came across a YouTube video that taught me to make stories.
What happens in this storytelling is that you create a story that involves what you want to remember. In the video, the story was used to remember words so for example if I want to remember the words "clown, street, and bed" I would create a story about "a clown who came back from a long day at work in the street and was so tired that when he got home he immediately went to bed".
My language of choice was Kiswahili so the stories I created would have sort of a mix between English and Kiswahili words an example is "She went down to the mto to get some water and to talk to her rafiki about what happened jana"
This is more of a way to remember different words by the way they are used in sentences that I understand and then use them in full Kiswahili sentences.
I am still Learning the language but this helped me in the beginning when I was just starting to remember different vocabulary.
