Education Intiative by Michael - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
One year shifts seamlessly into the next. While there is no worldly change when the clock strikes midnight December 31st, there’s no denying something is different. We look back and see one year passed, never to be lived again, and, then, we look to the oncoming year yet to be lived. Reflecting on that newly passed year, we see how we’ve done right and done wrong. Looking forward, we resolve to face our flaws and better ourselves.
This year, I’m giving myself a resolution that could help any student go further in their education. An education’s key fundamental is a genuine interest in learning. Without personal concern for the information presented, the knowledge sticks around until test time (sometimes not even then) and then quickly fades out of memory. Nothing is learned solidly without a dedicated and interested student. I resolve to take responsibility for my own education, to not just sit through classes and work “for the grade.” With curiosity and initiative, my studies will evolve beyond something measured in superficial grades.
Too many times have I looked around at my peers and seen blank faces, void of interest. After a tough quiz, these same students then whine about having never been taught the material they neglected to pay any attention too. I love my peers, but often the fault does not lie on the teacher, and, regardless of if it does, the students cannot expect to just sit there and be magically graced with knowledge, no effort on their part. My biggest concern is not that I see this problem around me, but that I see it in myself. So, despite the difficulty, I will strive to explore the topics and hopefully develop an unstoppable passion to learn.
