Exploring the Unknown by Megan - September 2019 Scholarship Essay

I am very passionate about the ocean. I have discovered many wonders about the ocean that I would love to share with others. The life that inhabits it, how they interact, how to explore this deep sea are just a few things I have observed. Exploring the ocean is something I plan on pursuing in the future as I am looking into a career in marine biology. SCUBA lessons gave me a glimpse of what it would be like to fulfill this dream.
If I had the opportunity to create a high school extracurricular activity, I would create a SCUBA Club. This club would start out with the basics of learning how to SCUBA, as I experienced in the spring of 2018. I would have the club members register at a local pool to receive these incredible lessons. At the pool, there is an instructor, who is a professional diver, who teaches the beginner class. Then, the students would learn basic skills like clearing water-filled goggles underwater, attaching your oxygen tank to a “buddy,” and my personal favorite- breathing through the mouthpiece immersed under the water
The opportunity that I had at the Penn Charter High School pool changed my life. Breathing underwater is one of the most eye-opening experiences I have ever had. That feeling of doing something thought to be impossible made me wonder what else I could conquer. Yes, I had an oxygen tank strapped on my back, but the feeling was real. Falling into that water and kicking my flippers, I submerged below the water's surface. That first breath underwater gave me the thrill of unveiling the unknown. The water gave me the experience of doing something thought impossible to humans. Establishing this club would allow my fellow classmates to enjoy the same opportunity that I did, and that would mean the world to me.
