The Pursuit of Happiness by McKienze - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
A "Good Student" can be defined in a number of ways: good grades are always a factor, participation in and out of class, but the aspect that sets a "Good Student" apart from a "decent student" is determination. That is why in 2016 I've decided to push myself. I will be determined and pursue activities I normally wouldn't even consider. These activities will include the pursuit of internships (paid or unpaid on top of my job), clubs, and volunteer work. These are the pieces of a higher education that I have been missing. 2016 is the year of new adventures and perseverance.
Firstly, I've begun applying to internships for a better resume and a better chance at getting into a good school with minimum payment. Gaining experience on top of work and school is something that colleges look for in a student and I intend to meet their standards. By pushing myself and managing my time well, I will appeal to better colleges while making sure to maintain my great grades, as a good student should.
My favorite idea of becoming a better student in 2016 is joining and creating a club. The club I'm creating will be a feminist club that focuses on inner misogyny as opposed to blatant sexism. I plan to hand out articles and have everyone write stories about their engrained inner struggles. Beyond, that I plan on joining the board game club. A hard working student needs fun, especially if it's an extra-circular activity.
Finally, I will attempt to volunteer. I'm fond of the idea of helping at the Boys and Girls club in Downtown Portland. I can relate to just about anybody and I believe I could be beneficial to the kids and the staff while also beefing up my resume. My experiences there will enlighten me and, therefore, enlighten my studies.
2016 will be the year of pushing myself to the limit. If I want to make lower Ivy league I have to try harder. 2016 will be painful but worth it.
