Gamer's Anonymous by Maya - September 2019 Scholarship Essay

If I had the opportunity to create a high school extracurricular activity, it would be gamer's anonymous because so many students play video games and I want to create an environment where kids with the same interest can be interactive not just thru the games but in the same setting. I'm from Baltimore, Maryland, where crime is at an all-time high and young people are losing their lives every day. I want to create a safe haven with good vibes, where young adolescents can be just that, young adolescents.

Gamer's Anonymous would be a non-gender specific activity with minimal skills needed to join. I would not only have trending gaming systems like play stations but "old school" systems like Nintendo too. There would be incentives and contest for highest scoring gamer's. This would be a learning environment as well because students would potentially learn problem solving skills, social skills, and critical thinking skills all while having fun.

This extracurricular activity would appeal to those kids who are not interested in physical activities but kids who go home after school and play video games for extended periods of time. The goal is to bring these kids out of their comfort zone at home by being in a social environment after school with the same kids that they are possibly interacting with through their game system at home. To these kids I would say, "Welcome to Gamer's Anonymous!" if I had the opportunity.
