The Worlds Enrichment at Your Finger Tips by Maya - May 2014 Scholarship Essay
“Everyone can teach you something if you let them.”
This piece of advice can help me avoid a plague known as Ignorance, an event that occurs when you close your mind to the enrichment of your surroundings. When people learn from each other the world becomes a kinder place. Closed opinions are the root to conflict and discord. Sitting in a classroom and not taking advantage of the information being given to you is utterly idiotic.
My life is different than the average 20 year old's. I’m known as a third culture child. My father is from Brazil, my mother is from England and I was born in Israel. I have moved eleven times. Some of the places I have lived are Prague, Telaviv, Washington DC and London. In all these beautiful cities I have been enriched with cultures and people of all sorts. They each have taught me something because I let them. Having an open mind is the best way to approach life. It helps me make connections with people and be genuine in how I treat them. People then appreciate me more as a friend, coworker and pupil.
In every country/state I have gone to school, each had a different curriculum. Sometimes I found myself repeating subjects. Using the advice I was given I decided not to zone out in class and instead listen to this curriculum's and teachers perspective on said subject. I would offer my views on the subject too, helping expand my peer’s views too. Like math for example, I was taught different methods of solving problems in England than I was in Maryland. I see all possibilities of problem solving. This has made me a well-rounded person for throughout my life I have chosen to look through all views.
I will learn from my mother. I will learn from my teacher. I will learn from my coworker. I will learn from the three year old I babysit. I will learn from the cashier at the gas station. All this knowledge and views on the world are at my fingertips, if I only just care to listen.
